You can know what traumas happened in your and others’ past but that doesn’t heal them. Trauma is held as thwarted fight, flight, fawn and freeze responses that live in the breath, muscles, and nervous system, that never got to complete themselves. Over time they show up as a body stuck “on,” braced and overriding, or stuck “off,” numb and collapsed.

You may feel or observe it as shallow breath, tension or heaviness, restless sleep, a temperamental gut, and moods that swing out of control. This day-long immersion is an opportunity to understand how your own system works, and begin unwinding what it’s been holding. Throughout the day we’ll reconnect with the body’s natural rhythms and breath, explore what trauma is and how the four survival states shape ordinary life.

We’ll learn what wild animals already know about shaking off stress and strengthening interoceptive wisdom. You’ll practice moving fear, anger, grief, shame, and anxiety through the body rather than circling them in thought; look at how the intergenerational traumas handed down your family line may still live in you now, and discover how trauma can become a doorway into embodied spirituality rather than something we quietly rise.A younger Jaya, teaching and practicing yoga for decades, wished someone had handed her these nervous system maps and somatic tools. While yoga reset a great deal, there was a residue of survival energy it couldn’t quite integrate.

This immersion offers the missing piece to the yogi, the meditator, the therapist, and the simply curious: the science of your own nervous system alongside practical ways to support nervous system regulation. Drawing on Somatic

Experiencing, Polyvagal Theory, and the work of Dr. Gabor Maté, you’ll leave with a felt shift toward safety, and real ways to discharge what your body has been carrying so more calm, aliveness, and freedom can move through you. No trauma background or prior somatic experience needed.

Who This Training Is For

  • Yogis, meditators, and movement practitioners who've felt how much their practice heals, and sensed there's a residue it can't integrate. This day is for that missing piece.
  • Therapists, coaches, bodyworkers, and helpers who want a nervous system lens for their clients, and a clearer sense of when a symptom is trauma asking to be met somatically.
  • Anyone who has done talk therapy, read a ton of self-help books and can explain their patterns of dysregulation perfectly, yet still feels them running the show. Now you're ready to try through the body.
  • People stuck "on" or "off" who live braced and overriding, or numb and shut down, and want to know why, and what to do about it.
  • The curious with no background at all that want to understand how your own stress physiology works, you are welcome here. No trauma history or theoretical somatic background needed. You just need to have a body!

What You’ll Learn

Learn to Read nervous systems.

Recognize what being stuck "on" (braced, overriding, hypervigilant) or "off" (numb, collapsed, shut down) looks like, and what those states feel like from the inside out.

Understand the four survival states.

See how fight, flight, fawn, and freeze shape our daily lives, and why they got stuck in the first place.

Work with the breath and the body's natural rhythms to find where tension is held and how to begin to let it go.

Move emotion through the body instead of circling it in thought, so fear, anger, grief, shame, and anxiety have somewhere to go besides your tissues.

Strengthen your interoception, the felt gut-sense that reconnects your brain with what's happening inside you.

  • See intergenerational patterns clearly, the ones handed down your family line that still live in your body now, and take a
  • step toward reconciling them.

Meet trauma as a doorway into embodied spirituality, rather than spiritual practice that has us float above our own life.

Leave with practical somatic tools for self-regulation you can use, drawn from Somatic Experiencing, Polyvagal Theory and more.

Meet Your Teacher

Jaya Hollohan MA, SEP

Jaya Hollohan, MA, is a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner and Nervous System Specialist with eighteen years of practice and more than 10,000 sessions. After leaving work in poverty reduction with the Canadian federal government, she spent a decade studying energy therapies before an unexpected turn shaped everything: the birth of a son who needed years of medical care. Helping him through his early traumas led her to train directly with Dr. Peter Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing, and what began as a mother’s love became her life’s work.

That path gave rise to the School of Sacred Somatics, where she guides people out of survival mode and back into the fullness of who they are. Her work lives at the meeting point of nervous system science, the body’s own capacity to heal, and the grace that lies beyond any wound. She works with those who have tried everything and are ready to find the missing pieces.

Jaya believes the body is not a problem to be solved, but a sacred vessel waiting for us to come home to it.

What Students Say

““Jaya, what a powerful energy you hold. My back pain that has been with me for decades is gone. Thank you for showing me the link between mind and body. The Somatic training on the retreat taught me so much about mind body awareness. The examples and practical training was perfect. The way you treated and released the trauma I experienced at birth has shifted me to another level. Your ability to hold space and intuit what needs to be addressed is very strong. You are confident, well informed, yet also calm and humble. Thank you so much!””

~ Jan, South Africa

“"Jaya is one of the few healing practitioners that I trust implicitly. I am so grateful to have come across her work and participate in her Somatic Retreats. I have added more tools to my somatic practice toolbox and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to devote an entire weekend to this work. Thank you for your grace."”

~ Tara, Canada

“"It is hard describe how transformative this Retreat was for me. I have been to dozens of yoga retreats but none have altered me so deeply. The combination of expertise in both Heather’ s Ayurvedic yoga practices and Jaya Somatic healing sessions are a healing experience everyone can benefit from. I’ll be returning. And they have deeply influenced my own medical practice too. I now believe that their approach is crucial to transforming our treatments of trauma & it’s deep psychological scars."”

~ Molly, Australia

“"This retreat was a beautiful experience because I am embodying the afterglow of this somatic work. The next day after the retreat, integration started: I noticed my voice—my new internal ally—now felt seen, held, and healed. This somatic retreat didn’t just “relax” me for a few days. It changed my internal landscape. My behavior shifted, which is evidence that my nervous system became regulated.”

~ Deborah, Canada

““Jaya, thank you so much for this beautiful retreat. As I look back, I am struck with so much healing and knowledge, I sit on the plane now with my back feeling strong and this existential pain I carried dissipating. Thank you for believing that I can heal. That belief alone really brings me to tears. The connection I felt last week re-installed a sense of magic in the world that was lost on me – this child like wonder of not knowing what one can expect behind every corner."”

~ Graham, USA

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any background in trauma work or somatics to come?

None at all. The day is built to be a true starting point. If you’re curious about how your own nervous system and body works, you have everything you need. People with years of training and people walking in cold both find their level here, because the work meets you where your nervous system is.

Is this therapy? Will we be processing my personal trauma in the room?

No, and this is an important distinction. This is an educational and experiential day, not therapy, although many are likely to experience therapeutic benefits. You’ll learn how trauma lives in the body and practice tools for your own regulation,
but you stay in charge of how far you go. Nothing here asks you to disclose or relive your story. If you’re currently working with significant trauma, we recommend staying connected to your own therapist following.

I'm a practitioner. Will this give me something to use with clients?

Yes. You’ll leave with a nervous system/somatic lens for understanding what your client’s body and symptoms are showing you, and a clearer sense of when a symptom is trauma-related. It’s less about turning you into a trauma therapist and more about helping you see accurately, hold what you see with more compassion, and know when to refer well.

What do I need to bring or wear?

Comfortable clothes you can move and breathe in, and layers, since a regulating nervous system can run warm or cool. Bring water and anything that helps you feel at ease on the floor, though chairs are always an option. You never have to do anything physically that doesn’t feel right for your body.

What if I get overwhelmed during the day?

That’s welcome, and will be held accordingly. The day is paced to keep your system within a workable range (window of tolerance), with breaks built in and permission to opt out of any practice, rest, or to simply watch. Learning to notice “this is too much” and honor it, is part of the skill set we’ll be cultivating throughout the day.

Will I feel differently by the end, or is it mostly information?

Both, you’ll understand your nervous system, and you’ll have felt it shift at least a little in the room, plus practical tools to keep working with it at home. A single day isn’t a cure for years of unintegrated trauma. It will offer a felt sense of what nervous system regulation feels like and the beginnings of a somatic foundation for you to build upon.
