Hatha Yoga is far more than physical postures, and Vijeth Kumar reveals its deep wisdom in this enlightening episode.
Vijeth explains how Hatha Yoga, rooted in ancient Indian tradition, goes beyond physical postures. It's a spiritual practice that balances the body's energy and prepares it to awaken the divine Kundalini within us. By purifying both body and mind through daily practices like asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation, we can dissolve past traumas and achieve a harmonious state of being.
Vijeth emphasizes the importance of balance in Hatha Yoga, where the sun (active energy) and moon (restful energy) within the body must be in harmony. This balance allows for the free flow of prana (life force energy) through the body's central channel, leading to spiritual awakening and well-being. He also highlights the need for consistency in practice, even on busy days, to maintain this balance and inner connection.
Through regular practice and guidance from a guru or mentor, anyone can connect with their inner guru—the divine energy within. This connection brings clarity, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of one's true nature. Tune in to learn how Hatha Yoga can transform your life from within.

We have the Jeff Kumar who's joined us again. He's been on the podcast several times before. Beautiful man, and he is going to start off this episode by leading us through a guided meditation, working through the channels up the spine to activate, let's just say, the divine energy that exists inside you.
And then we're going to go into a conversation following the meditation where we talk about hatha yoga. What is hatha yoga? And then also the energetic body and feeling into that. So if you'd like to participate in the meditation for the first few minutes of this episode, I suggest finding a nice comfortable position and just kind of tuning into yourself. You can close the eyes if you'd like to, and then just start to dial in.
So without further ado, let's just get started with that meditation. And so how the energy is coming towards the mid channel? Let's invoke the divine blessing of all light masters by visualizing them as the ocean of light above us, the light descending as a beam of light entering your body through the crown.
Feel receiving the light. Feel the calm and the peace which arises of receiving the Light. Your whole body is filled with this divine Light and is spreading out in all direction. You are sharing your Light with the world. Let's continue to stay with it.
Meditative awareness of channelling the Light. Let's bring our palms together in deepest gratitude for all the Light Masters for their unconditional love and grace. Namaste. I feel blissed out. Thank you my. Pleasure. Shall we start? OK.
Well, welcome to the podcast. Thank you. Thank. You for having me? So Vijeth Kumar back in the house, serenading us with this beautiful voice. Yeah, you've been on the podcast a few times already. So if you're new to listening to Vijeth, we've had him in episode one O 7 talked a lot of things, but it's titled The Life of Gratitude.
So expressing love and thanks. So if you want to listen to that episode, it's already on the on the track as well as episode 1:30 and 1:31, which is integrating the yoga philosophy, talking about embracing imperfections and becoming more aware through the Yamas and the Niyamas.
So a few episodes to link back to if you want to listen to the jet. Otherwise, for this episode, I think we're going to start with hatha yoga. We're talking about hatha yoga, which is like I call it the OG yoga, the original or the traditional style of yoga, right? We're talking asana.
So what is Hatha Yoga? So before we actually get into what Hatha Yoga is, it is important to know that all the yogic signs where it is coming from, what is its origin? I think in our in our teacher trainings and in the Western world, everybody is working on studying Yoga Sutra or Bhagavad Gita. But in the Indian tradition, we focus more on the teachings of the Shiva.
Shiva is considered as the Adiyogi and he has given the wisdom of yoga in many different ways. We have Shiva Samhita, Shiva Sutra, Shiva's literature on Shwasa, on Swara Yoga and also on the Hathi Yoga. Because when you study the classical text of Hathi yoga, Hathi Yoga Pradeepika, it is clearly mentioned that this knowledge is given by Shiva to Gorakshanatha Gorakshanath.
Often in the tradition we consider that as the form of Shiva himself which he took to teach yoga to humanity. So when you visit India and explore about Gorakshanatha, you will see that all tradition embrace Gorakshanatha so dearly.
And each person may approach yoga differently but they always accept Gorakshanatha as the Guru or the Shiva as the Guru. So what is Hathi Yoga? Hathi Yoga is where you make the Mother Divine as your yoga teacher. The Mother Divine exist in each one of us and yogis have realized and they have given a beautiful name, they have called her Mata Kundalini, Mother Kundalini.
So when you look into the body and try to find God particle in you, where do you feel it is? Is in your spine and in the brain. This is where the electricity of the divine is flowing, and this primordial energy that we have in US is considered as the Maha Yogini.
She already knows what to do, how to realise herself. The Maha is like the grand, the grand grand or. Yeah, the largest, the greatest. The greatest Yogi. Yogini or Yogi? Yogi. Yogi Yogini. Maha Yogini. So you don't have to teach yoga to her.
Yeah, yoga science comes from her. Yeah, But in one of the beautiful text of yoga, it is said the divine has created us in such a beautiful way and has given the free will. Yeah, you have to go back to where you come from. You have to return home.
But it is up to you when you will decide to go back. So Hathi yoga is where you will say I'm ready to go back. I'm ready to explore my spiritual dimension of life. And you go on praying. You go on making necessary preparation for the Mother Kundalini to be awakened in you so that she can complete a journey from the root of the spine, travelling all the way up to the crown and meeting her beloved Shiva. So Hata Yoga is understanding what happens when you balance your energy, the sun and the
moon. The moment the sun and the moon is balanced, the prana starts to or the vital energy starts to take a different direction and that direction is it moves in the mid channel Sushumna. And as this cosmic primordial energy starts to travel, she allows you to explore the beauty of each chakra. So basically through hat yoga, you're boosting your energy, you are bringing up so much of energy, and then you're guiding that energy into sushumna.
But lot of preparation has to be done to do this. Two important things that is of prerequisite and when you study Hathi yoga tradition, they go on focusing on this is the purity of the body. The purity of the mind is essential. Let's say that you have a lot of anger. You have not resolved it, and now you have released this enormous amount of energy.
And what will get optimized is your anger that you should, you don't need. So what you do, you prepare through the practice of asana, where you try to start dissolving the karmic ties. Yeah, the modern word is maybe trauma, which goes, you know, closer to it.
But we actually new Greek tradition, call it samskaras. It is more deeper, not only related to this lifetime, but so many lives. We have accumulated the karmic ties, yeah. We call that intergenerational drama or generational drama generational samskaras.
Yeah. So what you do when you do the practice of Arsenal is that to explore these karmic ties and you release them and you cannot work separately with body and mind. So you kind of indirectly working on the way your mind functions also.
But you really focus on the mind with the practice of pranayama where you will know that how through the practice extensioning life force, extending the life force you can. Uplift yourself to a state of mind which is sattva, which is beautiful to work with, or it is conducive for you to go more deeper, penetrate more deeper with the practice of meditation. So how do you assist yourself to understand your energy body, how you bring your masculine and
feminine qualities in harmony? Because when you are balanced, then only it is possible for you to experience the spiritual dimension of your being. I hope you're not asking me how to do that. So I hope you're not asking me how to do that. I'm not asking you.
To balance your masculine in the feminine body, would that be like similar to saying the sun and the moon because hatha's, yeah, it's balance, yes. It is balance, yeah. There should be balance between activity and relaxation or resting and then only you feel the perfect health.
So not going to any extreme finding the middle part. Like the neutrality. So that's what hatha is. So when we're practicing Hatha, you talked about the pranayama helping to evoke a bit of the energy body, and I think you said there was two things that needs to be done, Is that right?
So I don't know, maybe I interrupted, but I would just wanted to try to understand maybe what the second one was. The first is to purify the body, the 2nd is to purify the mind right? So that when the energy is ascending, you have the best possible experience, otherwise it is overwhelming. Because once she is awakened, she will start to dissolve everything that is in her way.
So it is better if you clear that before she is awakened so that you can enjoy only the bliss of her dancing. Otherwise it is overwhelming. Yeah, I have met some people here that they have went to do some practice on the energy body and the event and usually in the woman body it is very easy to experience the Shakti when they do certain practices.
There is no she can awaken anytime. Yeah, just a little effort is needed from your side. And you go and you do it. And you feel like this energy is awakened in the very first day and you have not prepared and everything, the energy is rising up and dissolving and you feel like you have totally lost control.
And this is the paradox. Every person who is in the path of yoga talks about egolessness, but so experience egolessness is not easy because you have invested all your life to be identified with this self-image. And once it is totally uprooted, you start to feel the crisis of your identity, who you are in this transition where you are not really yet there, you're not completely embrace the new and you have completely let go of the past or the old. So in that moment, it is not so
easy. It's. Like dying. Because you thought all your life you are in control, you thought you are keeping yourself well, but now you see that there is something within you which is just taken control. You can't make any decisions anymore. Yeah, because the energy keeps or the Mother divine keeps telling you see, this is what I require to progress my journey. So keep doing this only.
But if you will say no, I've been doing this all my life, I'll go back because of the tendency you can't, you can't even. It is so difficult to comprehend. So Yogi says you don't have to have that kind of overwhelming experience.
And that is why it is the grace of all these yogis, the masters, who has given the science of understanding how to unite the individual soul, the Atman, with the universal soul Paramatman. So it is a science. So they have explained, give us sufficient instructions and guidelines and we should always follow it so that we can enjoy this yogic process.
So this makes me think about there was one of our students recently that posted something about balancing what he called hippie world. Being in the spiritual place, you know, in like within yourself, but then also being in this material world as well that we live in and finding a balance between living in both. Whereas if you live too much in one, you know, it might not be so good, like too much in the material world, then you're losing sight of what's greater
than, you know, these things that are basically meaningless versus going completely getting completely what we call lost in the clouds. Or at least if someone is going on their spiritual journey and they're saying, I don't need money, I don't need these things, I don't, you know, and the kind of letting go of all the materials and all of the elements of this world that this physical world that we live in.
But in order to exist in this world, we need to have a balance of both. I don't know if this falls into the realm of this conversation, but it's making me think about because you're saying a lot of things about finding this energetic body where to the point of, you know, not necessarily finding it, but if we reach this egolessness, this ultimately this dying of our identity of ourself to experience the true essence of the Mother divine.
And then in doing that would be basically letting go of all of the material world and all of this stuff. And that's probably not something that, I mean, some people might want to achieve that, no, or work towards it. It's really a great question and I think maybe for a shorter period of time you might feel like this not able to fit in in any world. But later on your integration happens. You'll see many yogis of India, they lived a quite normal life, family life, and they kept on
doing what they were doing. What really leaves you is your limited belief. You were thinking you're just yourself and you're separate from everything else. And this limited belief is dissolved completely. Now see yourself in everything. You recognize the Mother divine in you and how you cannot recognize the Mother divine everywhere. Now actually you will do it with lot of love in a way that you will really focus more on serving the humanity in the best possible way.
So you will be doing everything in the best possible way and that is what it means to be you. You don't say no to anything, but you are not attached to anything. You don't allow anything to define you because you have experienced your true nature. You know who you are, there's no confusion there. But you want to be in the part of this Lila in the play. So you whatever responsibility is you can deliver and but having this misconception that we have to let go of one world to embrace the other is a myth
because eventually the ultimate realization is of non duality. Yoga is union. Everything comes together, but as you are in the process, one might feel like this confusion and they are going through this transition. But once the ascension of energy is complete and when the mother is stable within you, you will feel more love and enthusiasm.
In fact, you will be more successful in every aspect of life that you couldn't deliver before. You can now because you have recognized your true potential. So would this be part of releasing? So in order to, you know, get to this state, let's just say this place to live in a way that's would be almost, you know, this, this togetherness, this connectedness, this blissful state would require us to let go or release of some scars as well. Yes.
Yeah, in a most beautiful way. You don't even notice that you are releasing karmic ties because every after every session. Let's say give an example, when you do yoga asana, at every end of the session you feel great. Very rarely some intense emotion get released.
But when you are doing practice regularly every day, you are dissolving karmic ties. Just through the practice, but that would even like you won't necessarily see you said it happens, but you know, rarely like an emotional release, but you don't actually have to experience an emotional release for this to be doing the job. No, you just keep keep towards your center. Once you are in closer to your center, you start to experience the bliss, the radiance of your
being. And that's why even the modern psychologists, they are agreeing with the best way to even resolve traumas is to do asana practice. They are the most safest and easiest way to do it. Listen to practice with the breath, with the pranayama.
Yeah, traditionally you start with asana, pranayama and meditation. And this is very important also because what you are aiming for ultimately is to recognize your true nature and for the stillness and that meditative awareness is required. So you go on developing that through the practice of asana pranayama.
And it is very important that you conclude your everyday practice with meditation. It's up to you how long you do it, but always give space to observe silence at the end. And that's, that's more or less the structure of a hatha, traditional hatha yoga class. Yeah, there's breath work usually, sometimes in the beginning.
But you're saying it's after the asana as well? Or does it? Yeah, and like. When you teach a hatha yoga class, like what, what do you follow? Like what would you or what is your practice? For example, is it like that you'd do the asana, then you do some pranayama, and then you follow it with some meditation? You can even do some kriyas in the beginning. Kriyas, yeah.
The Rishet Kriyas mentioned in the at Yoga and also Kabalbhati is considered as a kriya that you can do it as which will help you to deepen your practice of asana. You do the asana and then you do the pranayama and then you can continue with even mudras, Maha mudra or mudra practice and then meditation, yoga nidra. So we are actually all of us when we are doing Hathi yoga. We are being part time yogis because Hathi yogis spend hours in each limb and they practice.
They have dedicated their whole into this process because in the Hatyoga Pratipika they say if you practice according to the tradition, in 12 years you will have self realization is promised, but only who is really devoted to it, they do it.
Otherwise at least we can't do it. We have some other responsibility. But when we do our sadhana self practice, at least these three fundamental practices, asana pranayama, meditation must be included. Kapalabhati, I always understood that as a pranayama, but you're saying it's considered a kriya.
So what are some other examples of kriyas which you can incorporate? You know, before the asana to I would assume activate the body or activate the breath possibly. Agnisara Kriya is also can be practiced in the beginning.
OK, which one is this? It is more like working with the manipura chakra. You breathe in and out. It's more like a stomach lifts in the beginning and then you start to do the stomach vacuum. But that's not the right way to tell you, right? Traditionally.
It's like a belly breathing technique. Yes. OK, just to simplify it. OK. Because yeah, my understanding of Koreas is always a bit like cloudy. Kriya simply means in the Hatha Yoga tradition, considered as purification. Purification.
When there is excess of things, for example, Hatha Yogi practices Dauthi Jala Dauthi, which is that you would drink up lukewarm saline water and then you throw it up. Why? It is practiced when you have excess mucus buildup in the system rather than waiting it to dissolve. So gradually and slowly you make the process faster, you detoxify faster so that you can deepen your practice of asana. So that's how it Kriyas comes which will help you to deepen the practice of Asthana and you
practice the Kriya according to the need. You don't have to do the everyday, it is only until you feel better. OK, so this helps to move us more towards our energetic body. This is all preparation. You're working on the energy body, whatever you do in the name of your Yeah, even if you're not doing anything, they're always connected to this life force.
That is what is keeping you alive. So when when we say energetic body, what does that mean to you? Like how would you describe that? The energetic body? Energetic body is the bridge between the physical, the mental, and the spiritual dimension of our being.
That's why it is so powerful. If you work on the energy body simultaneously, you're working on all as layers of your being. So the physical body is supported by the energy body, the mental body supported by the energy body.
And even when you have great spiritual awakening, it is because of the energy moving upward. So the energetic body is also, when we're connected to this or we're tuning it, let's just say we're also tuning the connection of our energetic body to the energies around us, which would be like the the connectedness, the union, if you will, is that.
Yeah, see, this is very important. I'm glad you asked this. The connection. There are three important connections that we need to deepen in our life First is connection to ourself and connection to the environment or the people around us.
Ultimately, connection to the source. You might call it God or divine and when you do the practice of Atiyoga, when you are working on your energy body, you are connecting to this cosmic divine energy. And once you connected to that and you notice that it is continuously channeling through your being.
Now what happens is you feel relaxed. Before you are feeling burdened by the responsibility. You felt that you are on one side and the whole world is against you. But now you are not looking that way. You feel like the divine is just holding your hands, standing next to you.
So when you start experiencing that divine connection, just like when we did, our short meditation of channeling the light is to deepen this divine connection that you have, which is always present. And this practice is an excuse for you to feel it more deeply. And once you feel that, what happens is you can connect to anything around you.
It's like the step one. Yeah, once that is established, all others has to follow, you know, able to connect to the energy of people around you. It helps you to connect to your own energy as well. So basically energy is the same.
It is the mother divine energy expressing in different ways. It might look different from the outside, but the essence is the same. And then ultimately connecting to you say the source God divine, which is everything. So not just like, you know, relationships or individual little things around you, but the collective like universal energy. Yeah.
OK, simple enough. That's all we need to do. Yeah, we do it in our own time. It is our. Little bit at a time. I like how you said, yeah, just, you know, keep practicing. And because I think for a lot of people, you know, they're trying to heal themselves.
They want to let go of traumas. They want to, you know, release these things. They want to maybe they don't want to have a therapist and they don't want to have a coach, but they do want to feel better. They don't want to suffer.
They want to reduce the suffering. And you know, these are goals that people have, I could say collectively, and I think a lot of them feel like they need to take more action in order to do that. I need to, I need to remove these scars like with a, like ripping off a Band-Aid and aggressively.
And I like that you said like, you know, that is a way, but you know, just sticking to a simple practice and maintaining consistency, whether it be the hot that yogurt or, you know, the, the practice, the suggestions that you're providing, like it's, it's happening.
It's happening naturally through that process, which is probably less invasive as well, more gradual. And it's almost like surrendering and trusting to the process of the practice and not desiring expectation of immediate results quickly will actually allow you to feel the bliss, probably sooner. And then gradually it will grow and expand to a point where you may not even notice where the change happens. It's just happening.
Yeah, Yeah. You'll have this kind of flow in your practice. When you begin the practice, you will see a lot of changes happening. And then over certain period of time, you feel like everything is same. You have not progressed, but a lot of progress is happening when you think there is nothing happening, right. So it's just you do every day and this with the intention of developing awareness.
The more you become aware of things happening within you, you will start to get the guidance from that awareness. You will see every day. If you are doing the practice, it will show you how you leave the whole day yesterday.
If you say if you do it in the morning, you will see what kind of food you ate, what are the emotions that you went through. Everything reflects in your practice in the morning. Yeah, you do the introspection in your practice.
You will say OK this helped me, this didn't help me and how I can do this better. It will naturally come to you. Don't even have to put effort. Only intention is that you want to be consistent in your sadhana. You give yourself time. Consistent that's the one thing to keep because then my thought was like, well, I don't know if some people think like this So like what's the perfect practice? Is there a perfect practice?
Like how do I, you know, 'cause I don't know, some people's brains like they want to do things faster, they want to get there sooner. You know, what do I need to do? Do I need to do the kriya first and then the asana and then the pranayama and then the meditation?
For how long Vijeth do I need to do this? And then for how long after that? Is it every day? Is it, you know, 2 hours a day? Is it, do I have Saturdays? You know what I mean? Like this is kind of the western mind thinking.
What is the process for me to get to, to the state of or achieving this state of bliss? And what I heard you to say is consistency is the most important thing. You know, is there better ways to practice yoga? I don't know. I mean, I think maintaining connection with the breath would be a, a key element there, but all the other nuances I don't know.
Do you have something to say about that? Yeah. What I can tell you is like what is the minimum duration you need to spend with the practice to experience. The benefit is let's say when you do asanas, if you have no time to do asana at all, you are like that day you are very busy, at least make it a point to do 5 rounds of sensilitation. Keep that practice going on.
When you do pranayama, do at least 21 cycle of pranayama whatever the pranayama practice among the pranayamas if you want to choose that which should be always present is adishodhana pranayama. So you can have this even when you do the practice, you will see that when it will start to respond to the practice and it can be different for each person also. But you need to find out that what is the minimum duration that I need to feel like I have come closer to my center. And then aim for that.
So Nadia shut her nose, alternate nostril breathing, right, Just to make sure people understand that. OK, that's helpful. So what's your practice? Yeah, I was practicing Nati yoga for some time, but these days I have to tell you the truth. My practice is only meditation.
I do 2-3 hours in the morning and again I repeat in the evening. I'm meditating more these days. Any pranayama or kriya or anything like this specifically beyond just the breathing that you do with the meditation? Or do you just go right to yourself and be there?
I just be there now it is I think I'm in my sadhana where I'm experiencing this couple months lot of grace. So I'm just trying to be more open, receptive and to integrate what's happening. And yeah, I see how I feel that day. If I wake up in the morning and if I feel like I have to do the as and I'll do, it's not that I'm resolve that I'm not going to do asana anymore.
It's just like I'll try to wake up and I see what is that I need that day. And this is one thing that my guruji has always said is all the practice is simply allowing you to to listen to the need of your being. And it is not going to be same every day.
Some days you might have to do pranayama more than asana, Some days you have to do asana more than the pranayama, some days you just have to meditate. Everything is all set already, so you can just enjoy the practice of meditation and the experience that you find in your practice that you need to maintain throughout the day. That is itself is another practice. You noticed how I felt better I'm feeling centered, but now more sadhana is required to
continue to be connected to this. What you have found that day. So yoga in the morning, but yoga throughout the day? Yes. The practice doesn't end when you're out of Shavasana, for example. Begins. That's where it begins. Yeah, yeah.
To carry that through. Awesome. OK, I feel pretty good about that. Is there anything else that we feel like we need to cover with regards to this conversation? Hatha, the energy body cultivating, I mean the practice. I mean, I'm thinking of someone who's like, OK, well, what do I know what's working for me? How do I know what I need that day? You know, do I need pranayama today? Do I need, do I need just meditation? I don't know what your answer would be is, but my answer might be just like.
Try something you can see. Try something and also study with the guru. In the beginning, your guidance of the guru is essential. He will try to see the things that maybe you're not able to see in yourself. You know a guru is just a beautiful mirror helps you to see better. Where do we buy these mirrors?
At IKEA or? Yeah, Well, what kind of guru? When you say guru. Anybody who is practicing what they're teaching, that's all. So like a mentor? Yeah, Yogi mentor. The one who is in their sadhana and they have understood the practice and been with the practice for years and to get inside from them and to tell and to know you're doing it rightly. For example, when students they come for teacher training or study with you, they will know so much about the body and lot of things and definitely that is
add on for the practice and they have to find they have to keep studying. Continue to cannot say that I have found this and it is enough right to have more eagerness to know more and whenever they can have time go and study and that's what I do for years now. To study.
Continue to study, yeah. Yeah, the school never ends. No, no, we're always a student and always a teacher. Yeah, that's great. OK. Any final thoughts before we wrap it up? Yeah, the guru is awaiting in you and that is what the essence of what yoga teaching is, that to connect to your inner guru.
And the inner guru is your life force, the prana, the mahaprana or the Shakti, the energy, the mahashakti Mata kundalini. So if she decides and she's ready to share her grace with you, her wisdom and through this practice consistently, you will start to have the realization that is required for you to be continue to be inspired to on this journey.
