Show notes

Sitting with discomfort is something every yogi is told to do, but Michael and Byron ask whether "uncomfortable" is really a feeling or just a state of mind.

They explore the idea that uncomfortable might not be a specific emotion, but rather a general term used to describe the opposite of being comfortable.

They question whether it is helpful to know when someone is uncomfortable or if it's more useful to understand what is causing the discomfort.

They suggest that people's interpretation of what uncomfortable means may vary, as it could refer to physical pain or discomfort related to fear of injury.

Yeah. Are you uncomfortable sir? But I feel slightly uncomfortable. Yeah, the lights are so bright in the sun, this making me squid. Yeah, maybe I just planted that seed because you'll actually look really comfortable over.

The, it did bring awareness to the fact that I was like, do I look uncomfortable? No, it was like, oh, yeah, I feel a little bit of tension above my brow. Okay. No. No. You look super comfortable. Yeah. How about now weird.

Let's get into more of the uncomfortable but Such a cool word.

Let's go phrase. Something you here in yoga? Yeah, you need a great, you know, to an order to grow. You need to be uncomfortable. You've heard that before, right? I'm not the only one, we're probably said it, but what I'm wondering is, is uncomfortable. Actually a feeling at all.

Is it a feeling? Well, let that land. Or at least try to land. So, Because a feeling under uncomfortable might be, let's say I'm nervous. Or I'm sad or I'm angry. The uncomfortable. Kind of triggered that emotion can say triggered, is that okay?

It's not like a naughty word, it's not triggering for you enough for me. Okay, cool. Maybe for others. If it is triggering for the audience, you can write Us in on email, address it to Michael, please. Thank it Avi. You get what I'm saying? Like, the words know sometimes will kind of take the able to do a tailspin but being uncomfortable might just be a state of mind.

Because you are the opposite of comfortable because it insinuates that you are. You know, if basically, if you're going to step into The opposite of comfortable you are in the uncomfortable Zone. That's what that means. So anyways, I was just thinking about that today.

I was like, you know what, it doesn't really seem like an emotion, both are very specific. That's a very like like a blanket term to describe the opposite of being comfortable, which, you know, whether it actually digesting the word like we're doing right now. You'd probably never really think about that. So it's interesting that it came up for you. But now this is the first time that I'm hearing it and it's making me think a little bit about. Okay.

So is it Be helpful to know when someone's uncomfortable or the more helpful to know, if there's something specific that's causing the uncomfortable, uncomfortable Billet East, and it's really hard to say, but that's kind of I was thinking.

So it's like, well, what does it all mean? Is it good? Is it bad? Like, what's more? So just like, we're just talking about the word itself and, you know, it is used a lot with being uncomfortable, not comfortable, if it's comfortable to do so do You know, if you feel comfortable, you may do this. But maybe, what's challenging is people's interpretation of what uncomfortable is, which could fall under the blanket of like, you know, physical pain or

discomfort that's related to fear of physical injury, or like, ripping or tearing, or any kind of thing like this. Because that goes into a level of like hurt versus harm. From a physical perspective, which is both could be uncomfortable. But it's like, what?

Are they both mean? You know, and one of them to me, hurt means something hurts but it's not damaging, it's not causing like physical reprimand damage, whereas harm harming you or feeling harm is something that has more of a long-lasting effect. Let's just say or damaged.

So hurting, for example, could be like a good stretch or like, it feels like this is you know it's a painful not but it like it feels good because it feels like it's getting some release or some attention or some blood flow or whatever.

So I Comfortable, but it's like a good amount of uncomfortable versus like harmful. It's like I'm uncomfortable, but maybe in that wouldn't even be strong enough to dictate, you know, something that would be Beyond uncomfortable, which is like it's almost like using the word uncomfortable gives a blanket term until they figure out exactly what it is from, like a strong point, like I feel pain or I feel sadness or I feel angry or I feel frustrated which would all fall into the category

of being probably uncomfortable. Yep, so it's maybe uncomfortable is the word that people use because they don't know how they feel. I mean, ultimately, it's like figure out a way to be okay with it and I like uncomfortable is but it's not a feeling. So whenever you do you ask it, how do you feel? I feel uncomfortable.

No it's not helping you identify with your actual emotion. I feel Anxiety. I feel anxious right now. I'm uncomfortable and it feels. It's a story it's like uncomfortable to the story and now that you've created it's the environment in which you're putting this this is the story of me being uncomfortable in, you know, the the the gym when there's too many people in the gym, this is the story of me.

What's the feeling I feel anxious. I feel anxious and I want to go. All right. Right or feeling uncomfortable in a similar. Just because this came up in the last couple, trainings is period of training, with 30. Some people, you feel uncomfortable, but you feel more comfortable.

When there's only like half that amount or 15 other people. Hmm. So I got it, enjoy this training because I was uncomfortable because of the amount of people there, maybe that wasn't a, you know, a sentence that I heard, but I'm just like, trying to use some examples, real life examples that related back to see how some people feel.

Some people feel more. More comfortable with smaller groups of people socially and or in situations where there's, you know, learning. And then, you know, I got to go to an empathetic place in a sympathetic place because it is harder to absorb learn or to be in your own energy.

If there's lets, you know, the more people that start to multiply on top of that. You know, I can't imagine being in like schools these days where teachers are teaching 40, 50 kids that are Elementary School, High School like rig, that's tough work. You know what I mean?

So it's like that's uncomfortable they can be very uncomfortable and to me it's like it's a story that's pretty strong or just a really true reality in that type of situation. yeah, I mean I think the only reason we really decided to just hit record and talk about this word uncomfortable is because I think there's at least a recognition from you and II kind of assume I have a lot of people have is recognition that Getting to that place of uncomfortable, there is

an opportunity there. Whether it's like do the uncomfortable thing, jump in the cold water. Go to the, the your sisters recital, even though it's boring or, you know, I'm just like, thinking a little little things that might make you feel uncomfortable, but you did them because you have, you know, higher values or because you know that that uncomfortable thing is a story and that the underlying emotion is being suppressed because you're just willing to stay Say comfortable, right time, is it giving it that

uncomfortable? Like moment to just like come out, I'm gonna do the thing. I'm going to jump into cold water. I'm going to stand in front of these people and save the thing and seeing or like, play this instrument and even though it's uncomfortable, you know what's the emotion? And he did?

So, maybe if we just kind of help the culture started with this podcast, share it around. Then we just start to change the language a little bit. I'm going the word. Uncomfortable comes up. Let's bring this up. Do you like you're uncomfortable?

Interesting, it's a cool story. What's the feeling why? Then Yeah, that's specific. It means it's helping to create more awareness. I mean, even just us talking about the word. Brings more awareness to what uncomfortable means and then bringing awareness to your discomfort or whatever make is making, you feel uncomfortable, whether you believe it to be a feeling or not, it's more of a blanket feeling. That is kind of like a knock on the door to be. Like, if there's something

that's unsettling. What truly is it? Yes, it's discomfort. Yes, it's uncomfortable. But what, you know what is what is the real image belaying perspective. Of that discomfort. Yeah. I think we got it, we got it. Yeah, I mean we covered it cool and there's a, you know, I feel uncomfortable right now that we got nothing else to say.

No. I mean I you know it's like without Like that, the countless quotes of yoga uncomfortable. If we don't over, not going into like the actual philosophy of the word, then I think we've covered it. The super well go just bring it up for people to think about it.

Okay, then if something like that, lets you go, you keep going not man's your podcast. You tell me how it is a shit. I'm not as fat that was 15 minutes and I was like that's pretty much 15. But I was like that's pretty good mean. We like 10 minutes?

No, no. What? I saw Lou say right now about it, wrap it up. Well, I kind of did, I think I just now? That's what I did. All right. Well, I guess, we'll all say, thanks for listening everyone and Hopefully you this podcast episode made.
