In the final part 3 on the ego in yoga, we dive deeper into how and why we develop an ego in the first place.
Starting from childhood, and how our interactions, upbringing and society actually impact our egos development.
Michael shares a poignant story about him as a curious child, and how a singular interaction can/could have had an impact on his ego’s development.
We then get further into how your ego stops you from listening.
And how it shows up around how we view and identify ourselves.
Especially for yoga teachers, there is so much attachment to how students view us and our classes.
So learning to put your ego to one side is an important skill to allow yourself to receive feedback and improve.

Welcome back to part, 3 of what is the ego. So, if you haven't listened to the first two episodes, I highly encourage you to go, listen to those first before diving into this final episode. So, without further Ado, let's jump right back into the conversation.
You got a big ego. Nobody says you have an ego. They just even big ego, right? You have a beautiful ego. We have a beautiful. Yeah, that's that's see that. Maybe you should start to change the language around lovely. He goes present. Might be a little condescending, I don't know your heart. The West, totally love when you.
Are you going through the conversation? It's so nice. Yeah yeah. But you know it's come up a lot and it's such a beautiful. It is a beautiful thing to check it. Yeah. Because it feels good to be able to disassociate your eye. Something for me for certain certain times, at least now, if you're so strongly committed in attached to that relationship with your ego, like you are committed, you're in a committed relationship.
You gotta Divorce, this ego, it's some point, but you're going to feel a lot of suffering, pain stagnation, and at some point, you'll be confronted about this ego, not necessarily by others, but by your, what is coming into your life? What life, you have the quality, and I'm not talking about the quality of your house or car, in the things that you can financially gain from having a big ego, but the actual state of happiness that you're in, So that's why this is important. It's just, it's exhausting to to
have that committed relationship with this thing we made up. All right, you go. So I have an interesting thought and I've heard this before, maybe you've heard it as well, is that they say that when kids are born, they don't have an ego or are no, it's not that there they are.
Pure ego. They are pure ego because they don't have Consciousness yet. I don't know if that's the true. And but she's an ultimately is just like all they need is they want and they need and that's all they but they're learning.
Obviously I love that you brought that up because I'm now thinking about what I just said and this baby doesn't have any strong associations with when I say that's not accurate. They don't have a story. They told themselves right?
But they do have a strong identification with I. Hmm. So therefore the emotional intensity is way higher, right? The effect is Stronger because there you have is pure being of light, that didn't know. It was separate, then it didn't have this thought that it was separate until this moment. Now, all of a sudden, it's just like, oh my God, like this is overwhelming.
So, it's kind of like those 201, you know, the 2001, how do you react when you're unconsciously, you know, like you're not choosing this comfortable shift of energy, but you're now being First is forced upon you with every waking moment of your day, right? So why is it exciting when you're a kid and not so exciting when you're an adult?
Well, let's say, it's just exciting when you're a kid, but it's also scary, I suppose. Yeah, yeah. It's also scary. Sure, there's a lot of fear and Trauma that happens from kids with all these new experiences and stuff. And I mean, we're all victims were all results of it, right? So yeah, those new experiences, and how that flares up or aggravates, or scratches or creates This this size of the ego, possibly, you just see how important it is to carefully. Raise your children and I don't
mean like, helicopter parent carefully. I just mean, be very conscious of the things that you want them to learn who they were, who you want them to be the freedom, which we did a podcast on the freedom, that you give them to be themselves, and to develop healthy relationships with acceptance the word. Yes, the word.
No. And why? When they ask why? So those four things are just a huge part of our development. When We're Young except little babies little children, do it. As long as you can't. We needed our whole lives. Help them to know what when they want to say. Let's say no to something that you're not telling them necessarily all the time.
Like this is a yes this is a, no, no, no, you think that's a yes, it's actually not, it's, you know, you got to let them find out for themselves and then when the Y comes in the, Acity the bewilderment and it's just annoying because you're like in this draining ego adult life and here this little child is like, hey wait, why do you have that shirt on like that, right?
Why does your hair look like that? And I you just like, you know, there's more serious questions that are asked. Like let me why did Mommy, why did that guy touch you like that? You know, and right, you know you're not getting Giving them that opportunity, you're just kind of robbing them if you just bypass it. So that's really interesting and when you say that, there's something that came up for me, I guess it was a little bit traumatic because I remember it.
I don't know how old I was, but I must have been definitely single digits and it was the first time I saw a black person and you know, it was whatever it was just the guy. And I was so curious about him Ryan. It was a guy that my brother played basketball with and obviously looked Up to my brother and my sister.
And I was the youngest and I was just so curious about the guy and I was like looking at his hand and his hand is Palm was pink, right? And the rest of his skin was darker and my question was mommy or daddy? Or whoever asks, I was like, why is, why is this man's hand pink?
And I remember my brother getting so mad at me as in he was embarrassed that I would say something like that. Like, it was racist of me or something like I was just a little kid. I got to know what the heck was going on. I'm just looking at what's in front of me, right? Idea, but I remember that moment as being like, oh shit, did I say something wrong?
Did I do something wrong? I felt separated almost like to kind of the way you're describing it, and that's maybe kind of some sort of connection to this mild little trauma and how the ego started to be fueled it early and just kind of took off from there because it had a story, right?
Story. Could, you know, obviously it could have gone another Direction. Like, I'm totally fine with. Like, I don't have any issues with racism or but there's there's a Sensitivity there. And I think it happens. This is common.
This isn't just you, this is, this is all people in the world. A lot of people write that are faced with some like this. This is a very important topic in this world, right? You know. So let's put a certain amount its children than, you know, any better, right?
Everybody's kind of the same until they're not and then they just want answers, say what they're not. There's want to know. There's it's there's no judgment there. They just want to literally no, most simple things. So yeah, I think that's actually really cool that we got to wrap this all the way around to how we raise our children and kind of condition are people in society. The ego starts there.
Yeah. So and I remember my parents response was. They reprimanded? My brother, or they basically said, like, there's nothing wrong with what he asked. Like, what's okay, what my class and even though I felt like, It could like maybe if my parents weren't present and they weren't there to be able to kind of like micro manage that situation. Maybe I would have grown up a little bit differently or I don't know who knows where it would have went but even though I remember that, it wouldn't
necessarily be a traumatic in a negative way. It was just like a memorable moment. Like you said of importance, there was something important about this interaction as a young person that I needed to learn something from, and what I learned is that there's a sensitivity around color. But it was okay that I was curious if there was nothing harmful about that.
But there's there's something that's sensitive here and that's all I understood and maybe as a young person and then growing up in the world, that allowed me to not become someone who's racist because I became exposed to it to some degree.
So it wasn't like weird or different or in familiar to me as a young person. So, yeah, after kind of like analyzing this from a lot of different angles, it seems to be that the ego, like I said, in the very beginning, kind of gets you Stock. But really, what it's doing is it keeps you from listening and listening in a way where you're practicing receptivity receptive, meaning that you're considering what is said to you to be true?
Not not sitting there with an ego story blocking that it's true. Like, is this person tell me the truth? What about this? And this is past experience I had with this and I'm not so sure about that, you know. So that's when I break down listening because Some of you might be like, oh, you know, I listened really well-meaning. I hear things well, but I can repeat what you said. Yeah, but none of us are taking it in a listening to it. Did you actually hear the word
spot in the words? Yeah. So the ego just keeps you from that which is a big deal. Yeah. You know and so you guys got to check your ego sometimes let's go. Sometimes you don't know to check your ego that's why having that person or that mirror to put it up.
Well it's like what's the risk? It's like we're risk is we feel like we're risking something. If we let our ego down, Now, because we are, who is this person in front of us? Let's say it's that kind of situation with your ego, the person in front of us, telling us something selling a something, we don't trust them yet.
Maybe we don't trust anybody. We only trust ourselves in a way. And, and, and so there, we only miss some ups, and even deeper. Some, people don't even trust themselves there. They just trust their ego and wherein lies the problem, right? He goes there to protect them.
The cycle continues. Yep. Until you start to be like, oh, let's just kind of remove myself from my ego and I'll shit that's scary. I don't trust myself, you go come back, thank you. I feel better. Let's go to this next thing.
Let's grab this interaction with this person. Now, this person is having this whole episodes happening within myself. Again, except I'm not willing to let go of my ego. So, therefore I won't listen to you. Mmm. And then boom. You never know what happens from that you just missed out on some connection.
All right. Yeah, that's a deep. That's a deep. It's all d, man. It's all deep. Yeah, it's good though. Like, I'm just acknowledging it and saying, like, I'm thinking about it, like, the way that you're talking was like, yeah, that's, that's a thinker. Yeah.
And it's and it allows How's that reflective thought, which is why we do this short little episode. So that, you know, there's something to actually like just mall over for a little while. And then instead of was just jamming, more noise down, you're down here year and a lot of its painted in our society as far as Michael, you're so tall and handsome. I'm sure you've heard that a lot in your life, right? Or something like that.
And or somebody's like tells you about hiring. Use is broad shoulders of these broad shoulders. I don't I don't do anything. You know, I got these broad shoulders and I've been complimented my whole life for them. So I do have an eye and ego attached there. That's comes in.
Sometimes it's like oh look I got these shoulders. That's right. So yeah I just think like again bringing awareness to what is the ego? Hmm. It kind of is where the key to the most helpful stuff will be right. Yeah, it's interesting because the one thing that came up to me is like the attachment to that that exciting thing like you being Like I have brought soldiers, like, I'm identifying as some with broad shoulders shoulders and it's a nice, it's
a nice thing. I've been complimented about it before. So if you were to like lose that attribute or lose the perspective, that that's a good thing. Then it your ego would be, like, crushed cry. Like if someone said like, hey, you're kind of short and not that good-looking I would be like, really, I would, I could either except to believe that to be true or I could be like No, that's not true at all.
Like this guy is known as shark, you know what I mean. But that attachment to those words obviously being more vulnerable as a younger person and not really knowing who you are and trying to figure all that stuff out and being more certain or at least some people are more certain of who they are as an adult and being less likely to be subjected to these types of influences. And then let's say, your power yoga teacher and someone's like, you are an awesome power yoga
teacher, but you're hot. The class Is just kind of, okay, right? And you're like, I still feel pretty good about that. Yeah. And but your, let's say, you're a power yoga teacher. And at the opposite happens, someone's like I really liked your hot, the class, really, really good, but your power yoga class was just okay, mediocre, you'd be so crushed.
Yeah, because you've identified with, being a power yoga teacher that way, which closes the door for that receptivity or that openness to hear, why? Yeah, or the feedback likewise This person saying this, is it valid or not valid, who knows could be either, but if you're like no, that's not true because I am a Power Yoga to gain, it is a good class than there's no, there's no growth from there. There's no learning from there where there's just there's a loop.
The loops this there's no true relaxation within your, your system, your entire to your core, to your Selma body to to your Quantum level of cells. Like the deepest level P. Yeah, vibrating with just Peace, you know what I mean?
So your ego is just kind of holds a little bit of tension there, at least. That's my thoughts on it. Yeah, damn, that's good topic. It is your topic. I didn't think we could talk this long about it. You did. Yeah, we talked a lot about it, but I think it was really solid overall.
I don't really have anything else to add and if I did then it's probably coming from your ego. Probably, come for my ego just to know to fill this up, but I think that's, I'm like, I need some time to reflect on what we just talked about. Yeah, Integrate.
Some of these thoughts you said some interesting things for me to reflect on. So we'll do the same thing, the audience, let them let them have a reprieve, a little break.
