Energy in yoga gets talked about constantly, but what is it really? Michael and Byron talk all things energy.
They discuss it as both a form of currency — something that can grow or shrink and can be exchanged with others — and also break down the impact energy can have on levels of consciousness and personal growth.
They discuss energy’s natural potential to move and the way this can impact the healing arts, such as reiki and embodied movements. Byron references what yogis call nadis, or energy channels, moving through the body. They talk about the different systems in the body and how this energy lives, moves, and can be understood within us.
Byron compares the currency of energy as the flow of money, something that is always moving. Michael piggy backs off this idea by discussing his own personal relationship with energy — from where it may begin the moment you wake up, to the moment you go to bed.
Together they discuss the relationship we have with our own energy, and the energy of others. We have so much energy that can be released at any moment in time. Michael dives into the theme of potential energy that lives within the body and how to optimize and access this energy.
Tune in to gain a new perspective on the many types and great power of understanding energy.

Welcome back to the going pro. Yoga podcast, Michael here, Byron here. Hey hey hey, welcome. And today we're going to talk about energy e mc squared while no, not like that. But we're going to talk about energy in the ways in which what is energy is energy.
A thing that we talk about that we don't really understand probably is it? A thing that we kind of understand when we related to electricity? Yes. But when you say energy work, when you say oh I noticed the energy in the room.
Like what does all that mean? Really so I feel like that's what we're gonna do. Is we're gonna deconstruct that all the way down to the possible, conversation of the currency of energy. The exchange of energy, welcome to the going pro yoga podcast. If you love yoga as much as I do, then this podcast is for you.
We talk all things yoga related for teachers in order to supplement and complement and even support after a 200 our yoga teacher training. Or if you've never done a training before this podcast is all about just learning more about yoga in an authentic way together with Paul t0 do in Byron de Marseille, we put together this podcast to provide you with a free resource to learn more about yoga, whether you want to share yoga or teach yoga or just practice yoga.
Podcast is talking all things you have are related and we try to talk from the teachers perspective and also the students perspective, to make sure we get a full 360 degree, angle on what yoga is all about and how its evolved in the modern world, Welcome to our podcast, okay?
So what is energy to you, mmm. Energy to me. Well, to me, I would start by saying energy is everything. What do you think about that? Yeah, there is energy and everything. Hmm. I mean, I'm and I mean, literally, like if wieder strip down every everything down to, I guess, a molecular level it would it would be basically divided into energy or light, something like this, and there'd be nice.
I maybe you can talk more about and expand on that or we need to bring in an energy expert to have the language for that. Yeah, I mean, at a, at a molecular level, or at Tomic level, Well is everything is in motion. Things are always in motion. Even like, you know, there's would let this table like there's molecules that are like moving in motion and even though it's not moving you know it doesn't need to be a buyer, you know like everything has a
frequency, everything has a motion and that motion that energy can be released or it can be potential energy which is just withheld. Okay. So potential anything. That's right. I remember I remember that from from the years in school.
Yeah. And I think, you know, to not talk too much about the physics and all that stuff for, but more. So just like we are all energy, right? We're walking beings of energy and I think the big thing is that we have so much potential energy that is suppressed, that is hidden, that is blocked at.
I don't know if the microphone is picking that up but someone's Hawking the Form, hopefully not a little distracting, right? But yeah, the potential potential energy that we all have and you know I taught a class this morning about the breath and how do you have more potential of your breath?
Which allows you to expand your lungs more than you think which allows you to get more oxygen, which allows you to release more energy in your body and your muscles, write that potential energy. So that's one perspective of thinking about energy, Right? Or just the conversation of, you know, I had don't have enough energy for that or I don't have enough energy to record a podcast.
I'm getting tired or something like this. So it's a fluctuating, as you know, it was described before it almost like a currency of like, how much do you have every day? Do you have, you know, a hundred dollars of energy currency.
And if I go do this, while I spend 50 and will I have 50 left for the rest of the day? Or is it? Like I have energy that is constantly in fluctuation, where I can get more or less? Depending on my habits, my consciousness of my breath, my food, my sleep, the people that I'm around the shield in which I protect myself when I'm around people that might not be supportive to my energy, things like none. Hmm, yeah.
So there's lots of things unpack. I think it's a good topic to talk about just because the word energy is thrown around so much that it's kind of like, even for me sometimes I get confused in the sense. Like, okay, which context are you talking about energy, like energy, work and what is energy work, right?
Is it like putting your hands and like waving over top of someone and like or healing, their, or on their energy or is it just like your presence and your ability to hold space and listen and be receptive and ask questions and allow someone to feel Safe enough that they're nervous system.
Regulates is that an exchange of energy does there need to be touched in order energy to be exchanged, you know, these things like this so I don't know. Yeah. What what comes up for you? What would be an interesting point of conversation related to energy? Yeah, well like I said, but not to be. Whoo.
Like we are all energy and I'm glad you clarified. That's true on a scientific level. And you, I like how you went into talking about the waves, and the movement may be the kinetic. I kind of look at that. As I get kinetic.
I can aesthetic. You could say, quality to energy but there's also potential energy and you know, meaning that it's stored and has the potential to move. That's what I basically was hearing and and then I liked how linking this all together to like the somatic, Healing Arts.
Like you said, wave your hands over someone practice Reiki, or maybe your presence. I love this. It makes me really think about like, like a town hall like like there's this circuitry in our system, which is now proven The Vedic history talks about these as not.
He's in ad, is not, he's like channels these circuit, the circuitry throughout the body, And so for a long time, the Yogi's have been aware of this. Since the electricity going through the body, and these are almost like they're not chakras Chuckles, but they could be like, considered a little tiny little suckers like to open them to let them flow you could say.
And then Yeah, kind of makes me think of a town hall, not another town hall, like a city that they're in, sorry, within a city. And within a city, you have all these roads, you have a town hall. You have a police department, fire department, you have meetings and they all have different functions.
And to me, this, this analogy could be overlaid over the body as well. The mind is part of the body. The emotions are part of the town as well. and so, when you talk about like, You know, thinking about the balance or I think you went in, you said, you know, if you have too much energy or not too much, we didn't say that.
She said, you have so much energy and then it goes down. It goes down. It goes down, it goes up, goes up, goes up. And maybe it's more of a balancing act between the distribution of energies within your town that you have your cities maybe you need some more may be arraigned recently in your city.
Really needs to like get a better sewage system drainage system, otherwise are going to flood this alley and it's going to store this and then that's going to hold that and you'll experience it through what we call a motion.
So what I'm hearing is with these departments, basically you're talking about the systems within our body. Like Police Department, fire department, you can talk about like your circulatory system, your lymphatic system. Yeah, adrenaline's, yes, it. No, I'm not not talking about those, I definitely am but it's beyond that, right?
It's way more on a level that maybe there's not as much research research and let's say more modern knowledge about more. Maybe more ancient knowledge about it or soon to become knowledge because that's what I feel like we're kind of reaching this this emergence where Western and Eastern are both kind of like catching up with each other and we're starting to learn like wow.
A lot of Western trained people, you know that have been had there, their nose in the book since learned. So much over the years, they're starting to wake up. Basically their noses out of the book now and they're like waking up more like more at the experiential knowledge, whether that's coming crossing paths with somebody that enlightens them, or they have their own experience or they see a client that, you know, and then it's just what the information age
is. Also a huge contributor to being able to just be aware right now. So so that makes me think of just the awareness of energy, In the sensitivity to energy. Yes. And I and as you go into that, I actually think the level of awareness.
It's like we're at the we're at a place where like awareness becomes aware It's self consciousness becomes conscious as well. And that might be a bit deep and hard to grasp for some but but like that's the level in which the energy works on, this is where it's like unmeasurable at the moment. Yeah.
How would you actually explain that scientifically? So what, yeah, exactly, it's more systemically, it's more like once energy is shifts and moves, like what can happen is a Consciousness shift as well, right? If you release something in your body, it could very well lead to a huge shift in Consciousness, the way you do something.
Yep, the way you live your life as well or it could happen in the other way around. So I think that's when the realizations hit, you don't know what you don't know, until you know, right? And then there's no turning back. You can't unsee that run, have that experience. And that's usually what happens in this in. Let's call it the Healing Arts Realms. Someone has a huge experience and now they're like holy holy shit.
I got to share this with everybody because they don't know. Right in the world needs it mmm-hmm so the energy exchange or currency as you called it, which I really like because, you know, I think we associate currency most of us with money, right?
So we can relate it to money, like oh, so it makes us think about money differently if we think of money and energy as the same thing, right? So personally I had an unhealthy relationship with money for a long time too. Just I think I've talked about it before on this podcast even but just being from a family that didn't have a ton of money and the rhetoric that I would be taught on a daily basis was was very limiting, it's very constricting don't spend your
money, you know. Don't invest it either. Like don't spend it. Does spend what you don't have. Put it over here hoard it hold on to it and we still didn't have any, you know. So it's like this. It's like wait. I got, what are you teaching me?
So then later as I became curious and was asking really wealthy relatives of mine who I love dearly like how what's the deal with money? Like what can you, please help me like you're so successful. Like, what's the advice?
You would give a 17 year old boy and I remember my uncle Uncle Joe? Rest in peace. He said the one thing I would tell you if I had to tell you, one thing was to understand the flow of money. And now I think about it as he's basically seen the flow of energy. Yes, with money to but it's also with energy. Like, if you are paying for something, you're supporting someone by doing that, that money doesn't just disappear from you, it goes into something
else, right? When you invest it, things like this. So going back to the energy Exchange where you are. You're a be paid for yoga class you go into that yoga class. Is it transactional on your end? Now that you pay for it or is there an exchange with a human being with the energy in the room?
Are you showing up for the room? Where's the room just showing up for you or is nobody showing up because maybe the other end of the room isn't even showing up. And then how are the people around you showing up in the class Dynamics.
I think that's where it gets a really polarizing to think about and teaching at the donation yoga studio for years. And if you're just a new listener of this podcast, I taught it Bryan, kest power, yech, sorry, Power Yoga in Santa Monica for about a decade. This is a donation yoga studio that was very well traffic's. Lots of people coming through every day. People would come to La.
That would be the ones to do that. Go to often but yeah, people would take that donation aspects. So seriously, write it at least for even if you put a dollar in or didn't walk out it forced you to recognize. That that you didn't give anything and you got that for free, at least brought awareness to it. Maybe, you know, I look at it, like the homeless, the homeless person that you might not give money to. But that person might go spend it on drugs or alcohol, or they might go spend that dollar.
They might save. It might take a hundred times for you to give them a dollar for them to finally do something good with it. So it's kind of like those donation yoga thing to I think the same thing like maybe Maybe that person needs to come back. Several times to really recognize to be in a healthy Place, mentally, physically, emotionally, all that suit, donate money and is to recognize that energy Exchange. So we're all in a different timeline with that, but yeah. Not to go too.
Far off track. I'll bring it back. Energy, exchange money. Yeah, I agree. It's a similar conversation with With energy, you know, if I think of this like a day-to-day basis I wake up in the morning, I expect, you know, I'm going to have a certain amount of energy.
You know, how do I evaluate, how do I evaluate or quantify that? I don't know, I assume that if I slept pretty well and I, you know, eight pre-welded night before and I didn't drink a bunch of alcohol or something. I'm probably going to wake up feeling somewhat refreshed and full to some level and then I use that energy throughout my day, right?
How do I use my energy? Where do I put my energy? Do I put my E into part of my work, part of my relationships, social media, you know, thinking about things in the future. I think about things in the past like, where am I Distributing my coin? Where am I sharing my currency for that day and I think that, you know, Chronologically over time of a day I would say your energy will require eventually a Rejuvenation or a replenishing moment of like rest and you know
food and stuff like this. But I think there are certain things that you can put your energy into that is also going to give you a return and there's certain things you're going to put energy into and it's basically going to be a dead asset if you will write like a relationships in your life where you put a lot of energy into and it's just the pleats.
You and you know sometimes we have to do that because you know, sometimes it's people that we really care about and we need to we need to give that energy because they need it, right? And even talking about and she kind of gets a little bit confusing in the sense. But to me, I just Think about what's important to me and where do I want to put my focus and energy? You know what do I want to put my attention? If you will attention is probably another way of saying energy.
You know, think about social media like, what are they doing? They're buying your attention, they're buying your energy, they're buying your time screen time, FaceTime, whatever it is so that they can, you know, Market to whatever people to sell you shit basically, right? But attention energy that's a similar conversation just a different word that's what I feel you know. So yeah I'm always thinking about things like energy in the sense of like how can I optimize
my energy? So obviously trying to eat well and, you know, people Generally kind of get a concept of that trying to eat well and you know, drink water and be healthy. Well, they, they think they do, they think they do that's another opportunity that people do actually know.
Yeah, well that conversation goes into less or more. I was thinking about that when you were talking and like most people, subscribe to more, is more. Yeah. But I'm on this curious. Trail of less is more right now and more is not always more.
Yep and that's has a lot to do with your food or whatever it is like people-pleasing more. This like I'm gonna put it with less could actually help a person more. Yeah, sometimes in, for example, not to like just brush through that without giving any context if somebody needs.
They're like crying and crying and crying and crying. Let's say, you know, they come over to your house, they're crying and crying crying, or to yoga class and you decide to go over there and like, console them and like, like, what's wrong, what's right? You know, what kind of like verbalize even like, what's are you?
Okay, okay, yeah. Or you could just be present with them to just let them on their own time. Kind of unravel that less is more and more as more or maybe it's somebody who's just constantly just over and over like their victim victim. They always They always come to you for for something. But at a certain point, you're like, Gosh. I always show up for this person but like this pattern is just so many times like maybe what if I do less and what's the energy exchange have?
What happens to their energy on the level of I'm going to give less energy into this now. What is their energy do with that? I think that's super interesting topic. Yeah. Yeah. I also wonder if this is even relatable to people listening, I sure it is but just like talking about energy can be a little confusing.
Yeah, I think I didn't know how to talk about it a long time ago, and but I also think what I'm noticing is like people. I'm coming across that are now in there like 20s like 20 even like probably younger than 20. It's probably true for, but like all the way to like 29, you know there's just more awoke people.
What we have to use that at words kind of silly but you know people who are just more aware there, where they're ready to. To, to go into this life experience on a way that like, we were numb to most people that were in the 20s.
When I was in my 20s. So, I was born in 1981 to give context to that so I think. Yeah. I think you know and, you know, I think people are listening this or mostly, what probably 25 to. Yeah. I don't know. 45 45. Yeah. So, yeah, either way it's interesting because they're either woke to it or they're they're a little, you know, more in my bracket and they're not they should be woke to it, right.
Right. Like wake up its time. Yeah. Quit sleeping energy. Hmm. Yeah. So what's your energy saying right now? But energy saying, right now that I think about well I think about some of the practices that we talked about on this Podcast certain things like you know, empowerment yoga or inner Guidance with Amara you know was on the podcast or just certain other practices. You know there's certain guests that we brought on and we talked about like the energy field and
we talked about just certain things Related to energy. And a lot of times, I feel like this unpacking of energy or this releasing of energy is It's like depleting and energizing at the same time and and sometimes it's a bit of both depending on what you got going on. And it's a fluctuation of highs and lows of energy that is required in order for you to live, right? And you're not always going to be high energy and hopefully you're not always low energy.
You know, I could bring it to the nervous system if you want up. Regulating your down, regulating your nervous system. but I don't think we should go there, but I'm just thinking of I don't even know how to say this like it. I keep thinking of Amara because, you know, if you don't know who Mara is then I don't know how to help you to be honest, but you guys just go listen to the podcast for the mara but she just speaks to That we have so much inside us already like everything.
You have everything you need you have. And to me it's like what does that mean? Does it mean words Clarity? To me? It means energy. Yeah. It's like you have so much potential energy that can be released at any moment and actually, I was listening to something a couple days ago about.
I don't know who this person was and I forget where I was listening to, it was on YouTube or podcast, but they were talking about the potential energy that you have in your leg muscles. Hmm. And how your leg leg? Muscles are so big Compared to all of the muscles in your body but there's so inefficient in their EX in their energy usage. Hmm.
And the reason why is it because they don't need to have all that strength used at all time. You know if you're running or whatever like you it'll use certain muscle fibers and then 10 stones get fatigued they'll switch over to other muscle fibers and so on. So that's why your leg muscles are so big is because it's kind of efficiently fluctuating between its uses. But what this person was saying was that if you are actually able to release all the energy
in your legs at one particular time or not all of it, but a stronger amount. You could do. You could move mountains like, you can move a car. For example, actually, the Superhuman strength, and that's kind of what he was alluding to is that you have so much potential energy in your body. Specifically, he was talking about the legs that if accessed can move a lot, can do a lot.
So, I think of it in that way. But then I also just think of Of the ability to go from you know completely just low energy to all of a sudden, boom, something happens, and you're just picked right back up. You know, let's just say like a fear response happens and all of a sudden, boom now you're super alert and you're you know, stress response at adrenaline kicks in and all of a sudden you went from no energy or very low energy to plenty of energy, mmm, right?
So yeah, the fluctuation of energy, the awareness of energy and the potential that we have the conservation of it. The Says of it is just such an interesting conversation, totally, we transform through. The emotions like so what?
Somebody might consider adrenaline, maybe, maybe it was love or just complete shift of awareness into that, you know, just that Yeah, like they're did, you know when we were talking about this very beginning? I was thinking about the molecular with the water.
I forget that the string theory, whatever this is, I don't remember the right. That might be misquoting here, but there's like an experiment where You know, they put a water dish and two of them and like people focused on wine and thought about love, and felt loved.
And the other one they thought about hate or fear and then the actual structure changed the water, right? So if you don't know that existed, I just wanted to put that out there. That exist is which which basically just proves the placebo effect is real.
You know, your mind shifting It's reality. you know, so we get so like stuck in our beliefs and our patterns that it do, the energy gets the potential energy, I think becomes Yeah. It's like damn duck like stunted. Yeah, it's like dammed up and like then.
Whoo. Your kind of there's a potential release there that may happen. It may not not. Could you can only just guess what? That turns into overtime like ailments sadness, depression, cancer. You know, it's just, it's just like, it's unreal. You know, if you, if you don't let go of the energy going to find a way to regulate it to like, have a relationship with it.
Where You're okay, letting go of it and like, taking more entrusting that there's more, where that came from. And like this whole, this whole Arc, this whole system hierarchy of kind of like, We have the realized in then, I think when Tamara says like it's all within you, that's kind of what we're saying. Like, yeah, I get really curious about that system and like we're what's possible within you.
When you include your full spectrum intelligence in their Spirit, your connection to God, but also your mind like, whoa, my mind is so interesting, why do I constantly think that sort of feel this in the body? Yeah, just as we keep coming back to is just freaking fascinating.
Yeah, it's very interesting. Yeah, the flow of energy in and out of the body and, Yeah. The other tasks meant to it and letting it be shared, but then also letting it be received it's such a it's such a hard thing to talk about, I feel energy.
Don't was like, I was like, I have my perspective of it. You have your perspective and, you know, there's some things that are crossing over but it's just such an interesting thing and I in relating it back to money to me is actually really helpful, because, you know, I grew up very much with the a scarcity mindset. Let me too and it took a while for me, too, but now I'm very much in abundance.
Right before. It's like I didn't want to spend anything at hold onto every little Penny. And like now, I'm just kind of like, whatever man. Like, if I do that, cool pay it. I'll just send it out like it's just money, it's just, you know, it's just this figure, this number that was created by, you know, somebody at some point in time, which is that this doesn't even mean anything doesn't even exist. Really technically.
But what does exist as my energy about it? Don't know how I feel about it and if I just let go of that energy and I let go of the attachment of that money, mmm, then it just flows and it just Has its thing and then all of a sudden, you know, but not just come back to me all of a sudden.
No, no, I got some money. And, you know, this thing came up and this opportunity came up and all its money opportunity, right? But holding on to that energy, stunts it and I guess I could think of an example of, you know, water or the energy within water.
Versus, you know, sorry, I River versus a lake and the potential energy that is Created from flow and movement, the river, life oxygen, all the stuff that comes from it and then the lake being a little bit more, toxic and becomes almost festered over time, because there's a lack of movement, lack of flow.
So festering holding on, not letting go all this type of stuff, which we all kind of know energetically to be somewhat toxic or not healthy. Letting go and letting things flow. And that type of stuff is really just talking about the same thing energy and it and when you let it go, and you let things flow, it'll come back to you and it's like, being okay. With, you know, depleting yourself entirely for one day because it's part of your job or, you know, the thing that you did, knowing that, you know, you
can get it back because all energy is, is it's not, it's not created or destroyed. It already is. Mmm. Right? Holding, we can exchange energy with each other. I can exchange energy with nature. You know, I clap my hands, right?
That energy goes from my hands and to sound, and then dissipates into vibration. And then, you know, it's eventually kind of Ventures out in a long way to go from the molecular structure. But anyhow, it also goes into forgiveness and, you know, if you start thinking about every single one of us as energy centers and you look at Individual relationship, you have in your life.
This is stick with people for now but yeah with people and then how's that energy exchange between the two of you and if there's dissonance or some sort of difficulties, let's say resistance, then there needs to be something worked out right with you. To be able to have your energies. Be cool, balanced and sustainable and then you look at that.
Okay, that's cool. Now let's go to this relationship. That was impossible to Fix. I'm just going to cut that one out of my life, then I'll be done with it. Surprised, you're not done with it. You're actually might be worse.
Now, you still have work to do at least. Now, what is that work? I don't know. There's other podcasts, the probably help you with that, right? But definitely things like forgiveness on some levels, which isn't for them, but for you it could mean talking to them again, maybe not, but that's, you know, its own case study for each relationship and eventually you just Kind of go through those categories and all your life, okay? Got all those people in.
My, how do I feel about all these? My circle of people in my life, how do I feel about the people not in my life? How do I now feel about nature? How I feel with my living situation, my partner situated, all of these different departments. and then I kind of helped to organize the Yeah the energetic you know.
Macrosystem wonder if there's a way that someone has like a map to just like make this simple. Yeah there's like you know the we could do that. I don't want to do that seems like a lot operators. I would Point everything to the heart and just be like, just focus on that and like everything falls into place. Hmm.
Whoo. Makes me think of something that we started talking about it. Probably another 30 minutes, so we should probably. And it's probably we should probably end up if you do another one. Yeah, we can do another one. Okay, cool.
So yeah, energy very big General topic that we just kind of deconstructed over the last 30 minutes.
